4th Annual SE MN Woodcarvers Workshop
June 1st - June 4th, 2008
Due to
the fact that we have outgrown our classroom space at Slim's in Harmony we will
be having our workshop at Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center in Lansboro,
MN, where we are proud to be able to offer you air conditioned classes, food
area and lodging. The lighting is also much better.

- DAN FORD, Audubon, IA will be teaching Carving a
Bison Bust. The class is for intermediate to skilled carvers using a 6’’x
6’’x 8’’ butternut rough-out at carving stations. Dan is an award winning
carver and will be teaching the anatomy of a bison head. Bring research
pictures, a medium carving screw for the vices, mallet, sharp hand tools and
your creative energy. Materials cost is $40.
- LINDA SCHMIDT, Kaukauna,
WI will be teaching a painting class. The class is for anyone. I will
accept up to 12 students. I will supply all paint and varnishes. I will
send out a letter to all students stating what they will need to bring.
There will be a different project for the 4 days. The cost will be $85 for
the week.
- MART LIND, Red Wing, MN
will teach the elements of carving a powerful Native face. The project is a
rough-out of either butternut or catalpa wood. This project will not
require a lot of wood removal or mallet pounding. Students should be able
to complete the project during the class period. Both large and small tools
can be used. Suggested tools are: #11, 9, 7 & 3 gouges and V tools. All
finishing material will be provided. Cost of rough-out, class and
materials is $50.
- MARTIN BOGANOWSKI,
Washburn, ND will teach Carving a Santa holding a Goose. 12 students from
beginners to advanced. Bring basic hand carving tools. The cost is $35.
- KEN ARMSBURY, Omaha, NE
will be teaching Carving Whimsical Bark Houses from cottonwood. 15 students
limit. Intermediate to advanced. Tools I use: 1&3MM veiners, 45&60 degree
V tools, set of needle files, wood burner & a tip, small dremel tool, 3/4
steel & brass brush, 3/32 drill bit, 2.7MM cylinder & 3.1MM & 4.2MM round
stump cutters, diamond burr & safe end. These tools may be found in the
Woodcraft Shop catalog. I will bring several wood burner and small dremel
type tools for those who don’t have them. Students should also bring super
glue (zap-a-gap), debonder & accelerator. The cost for materials is $45.
- STAN “SLIM” MAROUSHEK,
Harmony, MN will teach a Beginner Class in Carving a Cowboy. All ages from
8 to 80 are welcome. It will be a laid back class. Fun for all. Bring
basic hand carving tools. Slim will supply paint and his own sharpening
tool. The material cost is $25.
- TOM BUTTREY, Remer, MN
will teach Carving a Downy Woodpecker. All levels Bring power grinders &
bits, dust collectors, knives & gouges, wood burner & tips. .05 pencil,
dividers, eraser, flexible plastic straight edge, sanding supplies, acrylic
paint materials (water sprayer, detail & wash brushes, palettes, containers
& paper towels). I will have some supplies for first timers. Acrylic paint
will be provided and a finished 6’’ to 8’’ flat base can be purchased or
bring your own. Cost of materials is $42.
- GREG WIRTZ, Wisconsin
Rapids, WI will be teaching Relief Carving of Wild Life & Santas with
detailed wood burning and painting. He has taken Best of Show, blues and
seconds at the AWC Show at Davenport, IA. He is presently the
Vice-President of AWC and president of his carving club. The projects can
be done by less experienced to advanced and will take up to 12 students.
The cost of materials is $20.
- DAVID & SALLY NYE,
Fennville, MI will be teaching the Old World Folk Art of Fan-Carving: The
process of riving/slicing long-fibered wood and then fanning it to create a
three-dimensional design. A fan will be the first project that will be
followed with a bird of your choice, (dove, hummingbird or goose). Next a
butterfly is recommended. The instructors will supply the necessary tools.
Of course the students are free to use their favorite knives. A glove is
recommended. Non-carvers are welcome! Moderate hand strength is
necessary. The cost is $50.
- GARY & MARY ANN KLINGER,
Omaha, NE will be teaching Fish Crappie Class. Students will carve a
Crappie from a basswood cutout. The project is approx. 12’’ and will be
painted. The students need Foredom type equipment, dust collector, carving
tools, wood burner and 3/8’’ fish scale tip, lighting and power cord,
driftwood base approx 9’’x 6’’ for mounting. The teachers will furnish
paint, brushes, glue sandpaper & assembly supplies. The cost is $60.
- CHRIS HOWARD, Gatlinburg, TN will teach proportion,
structure, ethnic groups and details of realism of the face. His mother is
Native American so many of his carvings are native faces. He started
carving at the age of 8 and studied visual arts in Europe working for motion
picture companies such as Columbia-Tri Star, ACI Pearson (England) NHK
(Japan) and shows Cannes Film Festival, NAPTE, Mip. In 2008 he has a TV
episode on the DIY Network Series “Wood Sculptors”. Rough-outs of Native
American, Women and Mountain Men will be available. He will take a minimum
of 6 people and a maximum of 12. You will need a good finish knife, small
gouges, micros are good to have too, a couple of large 14mm #8 and #5
gouges. He can usually work with anything you have. The cost is $125. plus
rough-out.
- TIM RUNDALL, Des Moines, IA will be teaching how to do
a Santa face or a Spirit face on a ½ log. You will need basic carving tools
(knives & gouges). This is an intermediate to advanced class with a maximum
of 8 students. The cost is $25.
- BARRY McKENZIE, Lebanon, MO will be teaching Chip
Carving. He publishes the quarterly “Chip Carvers Newsletter” and is the
Chip Carving Editor for Wood Carving Illustrated magazine. Class project
will be several different and unique ornaments of Luterian crosses. Icicles,
and various shaped ornaments. Pattern booklet of designs for each ornament
provided. Beginner instruction in the mechanics of chip carving and WHY it
works that way in wood. All supplies and materials provided. Some chip
carving knives for loan or purchase. Cost of class and blank ornaments is
$45.
- JEAN SCHUTTE, Castalia, IA will be teaching a night
class on Basketweaving with three new styles and sizes available. Beginners
welcome. $10 and up for materials.
- BEGINNERS WOODBURNING. You will need wood burner &
water color pencils. Some wood burners will be furnished if you don’t have
one. Wood supplies start at $20. Class size of 10.
- BECKY BUCHANAN, Duluth, MN will be teaching a night
class on Jewelry. Come join her to learn the technique of the Internet
Spiral or Spiral Rope Chain. It’s simple to do and works well for
necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other beadwork. You can also try your
hand at two beading techniques and do the Flat Peyote Technique. No
experience is necessary. I will provide kits for around $10. All you need
to do is bring a small sewing scissors.

DON MORRIS,
Rock Falls, IL will be teaching a carving called “Golden Hill My Ass’’ (a
face of the Over the Hill Gang). The class will consist of 4 hours of Clay
and Demonstrations. You will need general hand carving tools. Will take 12
students from beginner to advanced. The cost is $75 plus blank.
